Srinagar: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable was killed in the ongoing firefight in Karan Nagar area of Srinagar on Monday, said an official.

Reports said that two militants who had taken cover inside an abandoned building near a CRPF camp in Karan Nagar opened fire after forces launched searches in the area. The camp is located near the SMHS hospital.

Two militants carrying bags and AK-47 rifles were seen by the sentry approaching the camp of the 23 battalion of CRPF in Karan Nagar area around 4.30 am, they said.

According to the CRPF’s PRO, Rajesh Yadav, one constable Mujahid Khan of 49 Bn has succumbed to his injuries at the site of firefight.

“In the wee hours, a sentry of 23 battalion stationed at Karanagar noticed a suspicious movement. He challenged the suspects. They ran into the nearby building behind National School,” said Yadav.

Yadav said that the building where militants have taken shelter is a huge structure.

CRPF’s 23 battalion and Director General’s office are situated close to each other at Karan Nagar. 

Meanwhile, all the entry and exit points of Karan Nagar have been sealed. Traffic has also been barred from plying to Karan Nagar area, locals said.

They said protest have erupted in interiors of Karan Nagar to help militants escape.

One CRPF constable has been killed so far in the ongoing gunfight between militants and the government forces.
